Same Tyre Size, Different Load Index: How to Compare Continental Quotes

Two tyres with the same dimensional size can still have different service descriptions. When comparing Continental quotations, record the load index and speed symbol alongside the size, then check the complete proposal against the vehicle requirement. A size-only quote leaves the load and speed questions unanswered.

Separate the sidewall fields

Continental explains that the number after the rim diameter is the load index and that the following letter is the speed rating. These are coded performance descriptors, not additional dimensions. Its reinforced-tyre guidance also identifies markings such as XL and Extra Load. This article explains how to document a purchase; it does not approve a tyre, pressure or modified wheel setup for a vehicle.

A speed symbol is not permission to exceed a road’s legal limit. A load description also does not create a new vehicle payload entitlement. Keep tyre information distinct from the vehicle’s own approved operating requirements.

How to use the comparison

Start with the requirement for the actual vehicle and wheel position, not a marketplace search filter. Copy the complete recommendation into the left column and the complete offered specification into the right. If a seller provides only the size, ask for the remaining fields before comparing the commercial terms. Keep the quotation incomplete until those fields are supplied.

DFC Cari’s editorial purchasing rule is to make every proposed difference visible. Do not mark a higher number or an XL label as an automatic improvement. Ask a qualified tyre professional to resolve any difference against the vehicle documentation. Their application answer should be retained with the quote rather than replaced by a buyer’s general interpretation of the sidewall.

For an import order, record the regional product source and the actual version being supplied. This avoids treating a product-family page as evidence for every available size. The method does not establish local stock, regulatory approval, test results or warranty eligibility.

Buyer questions

Does XL replace the need to check the load index? No. Record both fields. A general reinforcement label does not fill a missing service-description entry in the quotation.

Can the same size be accepted across the whole fleet? Only after each actual application is checked. A shared size in the purchasing database should not erase vehicle-specific requirements.
