Keep a brake disc’s listed thickness and its minimum thickness in separate fields. They answer different questions: one describes the product specification, while the other is a wear-limit reference for that exact disc. Neither field, by itself, establishes that an offered replacement fits a vehicle or that an installed disc is safe to continue using.
A small catalogue example
Brembo’s European record for 08.5177.20 lists thickness TH of 16 mm and minimum thickness of 13 mm. The record for 09.4987.76 lists TH of 20.5 mm and minimum thickness of 18.6 mm. These are two different products, not a comparison of interchangeable replacements. Brembo’s maintenance guidance identifies the MIN TH marking on a disc as its minimum-thickness reference.
The numerical difference between the two fields should not be converted into predicted mileage or a remaining-life promise. This article contains no physical measurements, wear test or inspection of either product.
Five records that should not be merged
| Record | What belongs in it | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Full Brembo number and regional source | Vehicle compatibility from a similar-looking number |
| Nominal specification | Catalogue TH and other matching dimensions | Current condition of a used or installed disc |
| Minimum thickness | MIN TH value for the identified disc | A universal wear limit for the vehicle model |
| Application evidence | Exact vehicle variant, axle and catalogue match | Fitment based only on thickness |
| Condition report | Qualified inspection findings for the actual component | Condition of another disc or the whole braking system |
Compare a quote without making a service decision
Ask the seller to preserve the complete product identity on the quotation. Check its current manufacturer record, then compare the proposed application and dimensions against the requirement supplied by the service provider. If the offer substitutes a different disc, require a new application explanation rather than carrying the old MIN TH value into the replacement line.
DFC Cari’s editorial method is to keep procurement approval and physical-condition assessment as separate documents. A purchasing reviewer can check that the seller named the correct product, but should not turn a catalogue screenshot into a brake inspection. Any assessment of an installed component belongs with a qualified workshop using the relevant manufacturer requirements.
For supplied used components, require an actual condition record instead of accepting an advertising phrase such as “above minimum.” That phrase omits identity, measurement evidence and other possible defects. Do not use this article as a procedure for measuring, machining or installing brake parts.
Buyer questions
Can a thicker disc be ordered as an automatic upgrade? No. Establish the exact compatible application. A dimensional difference needs a technical answer, not an assumption that more thickness is better.
Does a value above MIN TH prove the entire brake system is acceptable? No. This single reference does not replace a complete condition assessment. Refer brake-condition decisions to a qualified service provider.
