An ASEAN HS Code Does Not Prove Auto-Part Fitment: Keep Two Evidence Files

An HS or AHTN code classifies goods for trade purposes; it does not establish that a replacement component fits your vehicle or machine. Keep one file for customs classification and another for technical suitability. Link both to the same exact product identifier so a substitution cannot quietly change the evidence.

What the classification source actually says

Singapore Customs’ Understanding HS Classification, updated 23 February 2026, describes the international six-digit HS structure and ASEAN’s eight-digit AHTN. It identifies AHTN 2022 and Singapore’s STCCED 2022 schedule. Its Classifying My Products page, updated 13 February 2026, points to description-based classification resources and the HS/CA Product Code Checker.

Those resources answer a trade classification question. They do not inspect connector dimensions, vehicle variants, operating loads or control-system compatibility. A shared tariff heading is therefore not an editorial basis for calling two parts interchangeable.

How to compare two supplier offers

Start with the same enquiry specification. Give each candidate its own row and attach the supplier’s technical sheet. Do not begin by searching a competitor’s code and forcing every offer into that description. The exact form in which the goods are presented matters to the classification enquiry, while the intended installed application matters to the technical enquiry.

Record who supplied each code and whether it is a proposal, a previous shipment entry or a ruling for the exact goods. A past invoice helps trace a transaction; it is not automatically a current destination ruling. Where classification is unresolved, use the authority’s published route for clarification rather than presenting a guessed code as final.

For suitability, request a manufacturer document linking the specific part number to the equipment variant. If the seller substitutes a different revision or sends an assembly instead of a bare component, reopen both files. Mark the quotation as incomparable until the changed scope has been explained. This is a document method, not a product test.

Questions buyers ask

Can the same code mean the same quality?

No. A classification description cannot establish manufacturing quality, authenticity or service life.

Is an eight-digit code a single ASEAN duty rate?

Do not infer a common duty amount from a common nomenclature. Check the importing jurisdiction, tariff treatment and relevant date separately. This guide does not assign a code or calculate tax for the reader’s goods.
